WHAT IS LIPEDEMA?

What is Lipedema?

Lipedema is a chronic, progressive and painful tissue disorder that mainly affects women.  It is characterised by a painful swelling in the legs, thighs, buttocks and sometimes the arms and is caused by an abnormal accumulation of fat beneath the skin.

Although Lipedema was diagnosed in the 1940's it is still often mistaken as obesity.  Many people with Lipedema have noticed a familial link, but more research is needed to confirm a genetic link.

Women with Lipedema often say:

  • I can't seem to lose weight on my legs, no matter how much I diet.
  • I can't find clothes to wear.  I'm a different size top and bottom.

If these sound familiar then give us a call.

What are the symptoms of Lipedema?

Lipedema typically starts in puberty, but can also be triggered by other hormonal changes, such as pregnancy and menopause.

Symptoms are:

  • Your legs appear symmetrically swollen. Swelling can occur from the hips to the ankles
  • You bruise easily in the affected areas
  • The affected areas are sensitive to touch
  • You may feel a heaviness or weakness in the legs
  • Your skin is smooth to touch, but feels a bit like a bean bag beneath the skin

People with Lipedema often have restricted movement and may find it difficult to walk or participate in physical activities.

Treatment for Lipedema

Unlike the fat that is from gaining weight, the fat in lipedema areas does not decrease if you diet or exercise.

Treatment for Lipedema includes:

  • Gentle massage can help to reduce nerve pain and sensitivity
  • Lymphatic drainage improves the flow of lymph through your body which helps reduce pain and swelling
  • low impact exercise such as swimming can help improve mobility and improve circulation
  • Changes to your diet to reduce the amount of fat non-lipedemic fat
  • Enhance self-care with good quality sleep and less stress.
  • Seek help from a therapist to support your psychological well-being.
